South African Students & Planet Washington

Planet Washington’s Ken Rynne engaged in a spirited dialogue June 16 with students to mark Youth Day in South Africa.  The day commemorates youth uprising against apartheid in 1976.

The exchange took place at the South African Ambassador Hon. Ebrahim Rasool’s official residence.  Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Mr Marius Fransman gave the keynote address and students from SA in Washington to intern this summer and US students addressed issues of economic freedom and skills development.

Ken Rynne participated in a young professionals panel discussion and vowed to speak at any panel that considered him ‘young.’ Ambassador Rasool expressed appreciation for Ken’s historical perspective and wit.  The evening concluded with an extraordinary braai (BBQ).

First Lady Michele Obama traveled to South Africa the next week where she reached out to young people.  You may think her a copy cat.  We couldn’t possibly comment.
